You’ve asked for it and we’ve heard you! Numerous customers have asked us to create a shampoo that is suitable for people with sensitive scalp and dandruff.
We know that it’s a tricky balance to get right – while there are many anti-dandruff shampoos available in the market, they tend to be harsh with sulfates and strong surfactants that could cause irritation to the scalp.
After many rounds of refining our formula with itch expert Dr Tey Hong Liang from the National Skin Centre, we are very excited to share that the Suu Balm Gentle Anti-Dandruff Shampoo has now been launched! Our shampoo is designed to target dandruff and itch effectively, and yet soothe the scalp with gentle ingredients.
Our Suu Balm shampoo is created specially for people with itchy and flaky scalp. It has 3 types of anti-dandruff actives that have been clinically tested to reduce flaking in 7 days (data on file). The actives inhibit the growth of the malassezia species - which is a fungus.
To ensure that each wash is a soothing experience, our shampoo is sulfate, paraben and fragrance-free.
91% testers* agree it cleans effectively without scalp irritation. Instead of sulfates, mild surfactants are used in our shampoo to cleanse effectively yet gently. Strong surfactants and sulfates can be too harsh and strip off moisture and cause irritation – it could almost be like using kitchen-cleaning detergent on your skin!

We have also included our signature menthol – it has cooling and soothing properties that can provide relief for an itchy scalp. It also has a natural light refreshing scent that smells great. We explain the study that Dr Tey did to show the effects of menthol:

Diagram 2: When the itch goes beyond the scratch threshold, it leads to scratching. And this goes on for a long time!

Our formula is hypoallergenic and pH-optimised. Healthy scalp pH is slightly acidic, while a dandruff-affected scalp tends to have an increased pH. When the scalp’s pH level is too alkaline, it encourages the growth of the wrong type of microbes, and can affect the functioning of the scalp barrier. Suu Balm’s shampoo maintains a healthy pH level, unlike many mainstream shampoos.
We have intentionally excluded harmful emulsifier and foaming agents (DEA, MEA, TEA) and soap. This means our shampoo doesn’t produce as much lather as regular shampoos, and the dense foam creates a unique washing experience.

In the process of creating our shampoo, it came to our attention that a number of popular anti-dandruff shampoos contain zinc pyrithione. This ingredient is classified a carcinogen (which means it can cause cancer!) and has recently been banned in the EU. Of course, it was a no-brainer for us to exclude zinc pyrithione from our ingredient list.
Environmental sustainability is extremely important to Suu Balm, and we have been taking steps to reduce our impact on the environment. We have gone to great lengths to work with packaging manufacturers to ensure that all packaging components of our shampoo are fully recyclable. Our shampoo bottle is made using 50% recycled PET, reducing the use of virgin plastic.

As such, we have used a lightweight formula that does not leave an oily residue on the hair and scalp. Our scalp spray has been tested to relieve itch in minutes too!
